Norfolk Blacks, Bourbon Reds ..

Norfolk Blacks, Bourbon Reds ..

An email of appreciation from happy customers. Positive feedback is ALWAYS well received!. Thanks Carol, thanks Clare, thanks Janet, thanks Tom. Message Body: Thank you SO much for the absolutely delicious turkey that you provided for our Christmas lunch. It actually tasted of TURKEY! In addition it was wonderfully moist and beautifully cleaned and prepared. We are also happy to think that the bird had a reasonable life before we ate it! Many thanks and a Happy New Year to you. Carol Leatt and another .. Message Body: Dear Debbie and Simon, This year for Christmas we had one of your Norfolk Black Turkeys and it was so delicious I felt I must write and tell you how much we enjoyed it. Not only did it carve beautifully, but the meat was incredibly tender, succulent and flavoursome – unlike any other turkey I’ve ever tasted! Is it too early to put in an order for next year? Best wishes for 2014. Clare (Lostwithiel) .. and ANOTHER .. Message Body: Hi Debbie, The turkey was just wonderful! Many many thanks for a delicious meal, and for arranging for Jane to deliver to us in Truro. Such an easy transaction. Can’t wait for next Christmas! Best Wishes and Happy New Year, Janet and Marcus Croome AND ANOTHER! Message Body: Hi there, Just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your turkey this christmas. I was amazed how much meat there was from a bird that didn’t look that big. It carved really deeply and the brown meat was the consistency of goose meat but leaner and less rich. We fed twelve on christmas day and went on to have numerous sandwiches, soup and even a curry – all from a 12lb bird! Every christmas we have the same dilemma: turkey or goose? Now we’ve found the perfect compromise…. Thank you Tom Owen (Milltown)

Welcome Ripley and Bailey (and birdie)

Welcome Ripley and Bailey (and birdie)

Took Leo on a visit to the RSPCA today, to choose a couple of bunnies to take up residence in our empty bunny house (vacant since Tommy and Lilly decided to get along so very nicely and co-habit). We were introduced to Ripley and Bailey and, on giving them both a cuddle, and with no ensuing lacerations, we decided to bring them home. With the house check done and all the paper work completed months ago, we were free to box them up, sign some forms, pay the money and leave. Saw birdie – a white cockatiel – on the way out and thought that she might as well come too to join the South Torfrey menagerie. They all seem to be happy and settling in well. In readiness for half-term holiday attention.

Wind Turbine Appeal: final inspection

Wind Turbine Appeal: final inspection

9.30 meeting at South Torfrey Farm for the final inspection of the site of the proposed wind turbines (two C & F 20k). Returned from my daily dog march along the cliff a little late (showing Leo the sights – our new student from the shores of Lake Constance), and so only managed a photograph of everyone as they were walking away from the top of the hill back towards the farmyard. Pity, as I wanted a shot of them around one of the mock-up masts. Goodness knows what comes next – suffice to say, I wouldn’t like to be opposite the inspector in a game of poker! Very professional, very straight faced – no room for humour. Understandably. Met too with our main opponent to the planning application, and was invited to accompany the party to view the masts from Lanherriot Farm, across the valley from the site. The invitation was extended to several cups of coffee and biscuits. It was all extremely pleasant (a very hospitable couple). So, my thought for the day: it’s much healthier to talk with neighbours in these circumstances (even those with different hymn sheets from mine) than creating an imaginary enemy within. After all, we’re all trying our best to make the right choices for our given circumstances.

Turkey Lurkeys

Turkey Lurkeys

And so it begins …. AGAIN! (hooray!?) 800 day old chicks have arrived, supplied this year by Rutland Organic Poultry : organic breeders of Norfolk Blacks, Bourbon Reds, and Cambridge Bronze ‘heritage’ varieties – a different confirmation to conventional modern hybrids, but with a taste of the past. Turkey with a great flavour, that stay moist and succulent during cooking. We’re excited about rearing this year’s flock and comparing them to our usual Kelly Bronzes. At almost £7/chick, they shall be well cared for!

Rotavation

Rotavation

Safety goggles, check .. ear defenders, check .. ill fitting overalls, check. Had fun with the rotavator this afternoon. A few cartoon moments when it ran away with itself, dragging me behind (luckily, no one looking) .. but mostly, all good. Now the piggies field looks LOVELY and ready for sowing tomorrow with grass seed. Then a little rain .. forecast over the weekend (no, really?) and voila! Will go and buy some new egg layers once I’ve reinstated the chicken coup. On legs as before, to keep out nasty critters with sharp teeth.

Preparations for the Christmas Play

Preparations for the Christmas Play

It’s started. Jona Lewie, the Pogues and Kirstie McColl all confirm it. The 2012 lead up to Christmas .. the great British pantomime .. beginning with the stage dressing. I’ve chosen my tree. Put my order in with Amazon. I’ve considered sending cards (I fail at this every year – some kind of get out clause in the job description). Even the leaves in the yard have been swept in readiness for our Christmas visitors. And elsewhere .. christmas cakes and puddings are quietly maturing in Big Buns kitchen, whilst brussel sprouts are being harvested in the fields of Cusgarne – shamefully tolerated only once a year in our house with the promise of lardons – and beautiful children’s surprises are being gift wrapped at Bird to be sent across the globe. And cue the pluckers! Hoorah! Today, together with our splendid team, we began killing the geese. They’ll hang for 2 weeks, after which we shall make them ready for ovens all around the UK. That it happens at all is a feat of behind-the-scenes organisation; a crazed time of phone calls, orders, packaging, more orders, finalising transport details, last minute orders etc. starting for us way back in June and continuing until the final curtain call. ‘FIVE MINUTES EVERYONE!’ Santa, no snow please till after Christmas eve. Cheers mate. Mad .. hohoho
